Complete Guide to Installing Mods

Okay, I am going to attempt to outline how to install custom mods for the first time and a little of how to understand what my mods are and how to get them to work. Requirements : Pay Attention, Don't skip steps. Don't Panic! Let's begin.

INSTALLING CUSTOM MODS
First off knowing how to install mods is the most import step. Your game need to understand that it is using custom mods and where to find them.


As of Sims 3: Ambitions, EA decided to allow 3rd party files to be used without modification of there files. Considering how much the custom mod community adds to there games personally I feel they should do a hell of a lot more..but anyways...

Step 1

Create 2 Folders: (Example)
C:\Users\USERNAMEHERE\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Mods
C:\Users\USERNAMEHERE\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Mods\Packages


Step 2

Create a TXT File Named: Resource.cfg
Add the Following Lines:

Priority 500
PackedFile DCCache/*.dbc
PackedFile Packages/*.package
PackedFile Packages/*/*.package
PackedFile Packages/*/*/*.package
PackedFile Packages/*/*/*/*.package
PackedFile Packages/*/*/*/*/*.package


Step 3
Save the File to: (Example)
C:\Users\USERNAMEHERE\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Mods


UNDERSTANDING MODS
Assuming you managed to get the first step done and you have hair left you ready for adding my mods.  To start with some basic understanding. There are 3 types of mods. CORE mods, INJECTION mods, Game packages (variations for Sims3Package & simple .package files)

CORE MODS - Can only use 1. They alter the game at the code level. And require the versions of the files to match exactly the version of your game. Require constant update and can run into some very serious conflicts. But allow more control over the overall game. I DON'T USE THESE!!!!

INJECTION SCRIPTS MODS - Can use multiple and ADD to the existing game through custom object interactions, added menus etc. These can alter actual game files but are less of an overall risk, but still must be updated and used in conjunction with appropriate game version. THESE I USE!

OTHER MODS - Most mods are simple recoloring or re-meshing of existing objects in the game.  As a rule all my mods are cloned from an existing object, then heavily modified and then linked to an INJECTION SCRIPT.


UNDERSTANDING MY MODS
Now to get to the important stuff. Me. lol. Let's start by understanding layout and requirements. Under each mod, there is a requirements section. Let's start by understanding the icons.

  • This allows object to link into existing object, register overrides and allow click environment effects.
Sound Fx Package
  • A Zip Archieve cotaining all MP3 sound effects used by mods. See HERE for how to get these to work.
N/ATexture Core
  • A Texture repository for specialized mods. ***Not yet released***
The Sims 3Game Icon
  • Indicates what expansions are required, only listed on Required Shared Files Above.

Download the Most Recent copy of my Shared Sound File:

Unzip it to the root of Drive C:

So Final Layout should be like this:
C:\Sims3Sounds\Dragonsiremods\ THE FILES ARE HERE

*** Music Must be Enabled For MP3 Sounds to Work, doesn't replace music.


UPDATING

EA some time does some rather dumb things when it comes to updating. So as a rule unless files have been updated to that version EA has updated a lot can go wrong.


Also sometimes EA's update had custom files, and there updates won't install or installation breaks game if mods installed requiring you to removed mods from game before updating, and in some cases unistalling your game. Also clearing your cache files in the Sims 3 save folder can also sometimes help.


All else fails what for others to update so you know things work.


FAQ

Where can I post my bugs or Logs to help find my problem?
NOT IN COMMENTS! I cannot respond to questions like that using that method, and I do not want to clutter the comments with technical stuff. There is a KONTACR button to email me directly for support.


Where can I find (Insert Mod Name) in the game?
All my mods can be found in Electronics/Misc..since they are SciFi. May make a custom folder at some point.


Why do I have to have Expansion (Insert Name) to use your mods?
In some cases I have no choice but to, other times I have decided to produce the mod with the intended look and feel, and will in some cases go back to try and allow support for earlier expansion packs.


Can you add a feature to a mod?
In some cases I will be happy to if there is enough interest in it.


When is (Insert Name) going to be released?
The current mod I am updating/working on will always be posted in the upcoming section. Check there for status. If it is not in there, it is not being worked on, except in minor updates or bug fixes.


Can I request a Specific mod?
You Can try.


Sims 2 Mod (Insert Name) isn't working...
I  no longer support Sims 2 Mods, all mods will be recreated for Sims 3.


I cant figure out how to use this mod, how do I?
In most cases if you may need to have certain requirements, skills or other to use a feature. I will try to indicate those features in the change logs or in the PDF or such for each mod, but since I keep making upgrades this becomes a chore.


I have heard about one of your mods, but there does not appear to be downloads for it. How can I get it?
Under no circumstances should any mods of mine be in the wild unless they are posted here, or at one time were hosted at Mod the Sims. The only reason there would be is if I have given an exclusive mod out and they have shared it with others, or it is a beta test that has yet to be made public in such cases I would appreciate being informed so as to not allow such a leak to continue.


Why were your files removed from Mod the Sims?
I see this statement every now and again, they were not. I removed my files because I disagreed with new policies that came into effect. I am still a member and visit the site now and again, and am proud to be a member. I just felt since the site is supported by the developers they should be given more consideration and not have to submit things for approval. Although I understand they want to maintain a level of quality, this to me seemed like away to make money off others and tell them how things should be. And I found that information on how to do certain things like custom sounds etc, were in the know but alot of people but the information was never really shared except within certain small groups. This is not the case for everyone there just a few.So I guess, I wanted more creative control no how my stuff was shared, and the privilege that came with them sharing my files.


Will you ever host your readable comics & other comic shop stuff?
Simply put...I don't know.


I see you now have a Donation Button, Will you ever move your mods to a pay site or other?
NO. I have been asked in the past, but I will never do it. The donation button is there because occasionally people have expressed interest in saying thanks and it simply gets used to help get the next expansions as they come out. People can also visit ads if they wish to help in some small ways, just don't do it because I ask, but because you see something that might be interesting, and know that it also helps the site, if you do it here instead of somewhere else..repeatted clicking does not help thanks for the thought...just visit and enjoy.
